German exam was updated
On May 5, 2025, questions 72 and 73 from the German naturalization exam, also known as “Leben in Deutschland,” were updated.
These questions pertain to the current Chancellor of Germany and the two largest parliamentary groups in the Bundestag, the German parliament.
Previously, Olaf Scholz was the correct answer for question #72. Now, Friedrich Merz holds this position. Additionally, Franziska Giffey (a member of the German Federal Council) was listed as one of the incorrect options. She has been replaced by Ursula von der Leyen, who recently became the President of the European Commission.
Federal elections in Germany were held on February 25, 2025. They were heavily influenced by the ongoing challenges Germany faced, including a crisis resulting from the post-pandemic recovery and the economic impact of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. These events caused a significant spike in inflation, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among voters. As a result, the AfD, an extremist and populist party, gained considerable support, while the SPD, which had led the previous coalition, suffered a sharp decline in popularity. Currently, the two largest parties in the Bundestag are the CDU/CSU and the AfD.
However, the AfD remains in opposition, as all major parties have refused to collaborate with them due to their controversial positions, which include allegations of racism and their adherence to conspiracy theories.
In the updated version of question #73, the FDP is no longer listed as an option, likely because they failed to surpass the 5% threshold and are therefore not represented in the parliament. The correct answer remains the first option, which is now CDU/CSU and AfD.
